After the High Atlas mountain crossing, you start entering a more desert landscape, but with bits of palm groves and oases. The highlights of your excursion will unmistakably be Ksar Ait Benhaddou. Obviously exceptional will also be Ouarzazate city, Tissedrine winding road, Gorges du Todra, and Erg Chebbi dunes. Morocco 1 week itinerary
Day 1 – Marrakech – Ksar Ait Benhaddou – Ouarzazate
This is where your one week in Morocco journey begins. Start your day early morning to go from Marrakech to Ouarzazate city. You will have the opportunity to cross the mighty Atlas Mountains and enjoy its amazing views.
You will pass the Tizi n’Tichka, known as the Col du Tichka in French. This is a famous Moroccan mountain pass at an altitude of 2260 meters (7410feet) above sea level. This path to the desert is positioned in the High Atlas mountains range. In the local Berber Amazigh language, Tizi n’Tichka means “difficult mountain meadow”.
After a couple of strategic photos stops on the way, you will finally arrive at Ksar Ait Benhaddou, an ancient outpost for caravans carrying goods between Marrakech and destinations in sub-Saharan Africa. Ait Benhaddou is enlisted as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. This location is also set for many famous box office movies such as Gladiator for example. On the small trailer below you can see how the village was used as the magnificent set of Russel Crowe’s Capua Arena fight.
In the end of the first stage of your 7 days in Morocco, you will spend the night at a hotel in Ouarzazate with dinner and breakfast included. Tomorrow more amazing places will come.
Day 2 – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley – Erg Chebbi Dunes (camel trekking)
Morning departure to go from Ouarzazate to Dades Valley. Today you explore many of the most beautiful places in south Morocco. Enter Dades Valley and enjoy such landscapes that might confuse you from being in Morocco or planet Mars. The red-color tones of the mountains are unbelievable. After crossing the Dades Valley, you go back to the main road and enter the Tinghir Valley following the Todra river until you reach the breathtaking Todra Canyons. Explore the area and surrender to this massive natural rock construction. The Morocco itinerary 7 days to the desert couldn’t get any better as you enter the Sahara Desert, the change of landscape is as obvious as fantastic. You will arrive at Erg Chebbi dunes in time to go on a camel ride. After you get dropped off at an authentic desert camp where you will spend the night in a tent with dinner and breakfast included.
Day 3 – Erg Chebbi Dunes
Early morning wake up to enjoy the sunrise in the desert. Don’t miss this opportunity even if it means rising up early to climb the dunes. The reward is worthwhile. There are times that the sun creates this surreal colors while rising up from the Algerian mountains. This is an epic experience.
You’re going back to your hotel to have breakfast and get ready to explore the desert. Today you will be taken to several places in the region in order to get to know its culture, traditions, and best places to visit.
The highlight of the day will be a phenomenal Gnawa show with dance and music played by local artists. People from Khamlia village are descendants of sub-Saharan Africa tribes that stayed in the region while the ancient caravan routes we still operating. Nowadays, they maintain different traditions that create a very interesting and creative way of life.
After visiting Hassilabied oasis, you’ll be taken to your hotel. Enjoy and relax the rest of the day until your time to go on a camel trekking just before sunset. You will spend the night in a desert camp in the dunes. If you thought your Sahara trip couldn’t get any better, well, you got it all wrong. The evening will be with music and local dance while eating a delicious local meal.
The difference between morocco tours 7 days to the desert and other tours with fewer days, is that you get to enjoy this great time exploring the region around Erg Chebbi dunes. Get to visit Merzouga village, Hassilabied, Khamlia and have a better glimpse of the area, its interesting and peculiar culture, and its friendly and diverse people.
Day 4 – Erg Chebbi Dunes – Nkob – Tamnougalt
For those who wish to repeat and enjoy the early sunrise in the dunes, this is your last chance. Those who want to rest a bit more and get ready to start the day, breakfast will be served and you should pack to get ready to move on. Today, our final destination is the fantastic mud village of Tamnougalt, in the heart of the fabulous Draa valley.
After leaving the dunes we cross the desert into Rissani where we quickly explore its central traditional market. The road will be amazing today as we traverse pure African landscapes. The region is renowned for being one of the richest parts of the world in terms of fossils. We will have lunch on the way until we reach Nkob, a Berber village popular for its 39 well-preserved kasbahs.
Afternoon arrival to Tamnougalt. You will have dinner in the hotel and hopefully have a good night’s sleep so that you get some rest to continue your tour the next day. This is the end of your fifth day of a lovely Morocco one week itinerary.
Day 5 – Tamnougalt – Zagora – Tamegroute – Erg Chigaga Dunes
Good morning from the Draa valley. Get ready, pack of things, and have breakfast.
You will explore the old part of Tamnougalt, interact with locals, and have a look in the palm grove. Today is a special day as you explore the fantastic landscapes and village of this epic Moroccan valley.
Today, you will visit many special places, such as Ksar Tissergate, and its fantastic Ethnographic museum, and also Tamegroute village with its traditional pottery manufacturing.
After driving in sandy tracks into the open desert, you will arrive at your camp in Erg Chigaga, for another night in the middle of the dunes, sleeping in a desert camp. Night activities and great dinner as usual.
This day proves that a morocco itinerary one week to explore the desert is totally worth it. Like this, you have the possibility of visiting two famous desert dunes in Morocco. With fewer days, you could never do this.
Day 6 – Erg Chigaga – Draa Valley – Agdz – Fint Oasis
Welcome to another day waking up in the Sahara Desert. Early wake up to enjoy the sunrise in the desert. Erg Chigaga Dunes are the longest dunes in Morocco. They spread in a really vast area. The sense of being in the wilderness is obvious and you will enjoy every moment of it. It is time to get ready, pack things, and have breakfast. We will drive up in the direction of Ouarzazate, crossing the fascinating Draa Valley and Jbel Saghro.
Furthermore, on the way, you will stop to photography the incredible panoramic view of Agdz palm grove before you arrive in Fint. The breathtaking Fint Oasis will not leave you indifferent to its inherent beauty and rawness of landscapes. A mix of palm grove with rocky cliffs, a picturesque traditional stone village, and friendly people. Sleep in a hotel with an amazing view, with dinner and breakfast included
Day 7 – Fint Oasis – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
After breakfast, we will leave our hotel in Ouarzazate in order to visit several places in the city. We start with the charming Taourirt Kasbah, a 17th-century palace totally made of mud. You can choose to take an official guide. He will explain the details of the kasbah. Instead, you can just pay for the ticket and explore the place on your own. Watch out not to miss the most important rooms with ceiling decoration and window views.
After Taourirt we move one to the exciting Atlas Film Studios. Don’t get this place wrong, we’re talking about the fact that these are living studios. Possibly, you will visit this place while some important Holywood production is being shot there. You might even cross Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt?! Who knows…
Throughout the years, the Atlas Studios Ouarzazate has served as a shooting location for Babel, The Living Daylights, Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, Alexander the Great, and Kingdom of Heaven. Also Kundun, Body of Lies, The Mummy, and Star Wars for example. On the trailer below you can watch the behind the scenes of the Kingdom of Heaven movie and how they prepared the Siege of Jerusalem to be shot in Ouarzazate. Very interesting.
After visiting Ouarzazate you will be taken across the high Atlas Mountains. Up to altitudes above 2200 meters, in order to cross the mountain range to be able to get to our final destination of the day: Marrakech.
The mountain crossing takes you through breathtaking views. If you visit Morocco from late November to late February, you will surely see this region of Morocco full of snow. The contrast of getting from the Sahara Desert to Marrakech, couldn’t be more unbelievable.
